In order to have a successful year in social science class, students must be familiar with the concept of demographics. Both what demographics are and how they impact people are semi-intuitive, but not on their face obvious. Because demographic information is often couched in political relevancy (especially in the case of social science classes), students often limit their understanding of demographics and their significance to the realm of politics. While this is useful, it would be ideal for students to generalize their understanding of demographics to things like healthcare, education, economics, etc. For this reason, this unit will situate a conversation and analysis of demographic information in the realm of the healthcare system and outcomes, specifically as they pertain to cancer prevalence and treatment outcomes.
