TIP Teacher Provides New Opportunities for Students at Southwark School February 28, 2024 – Posted in: Uncategorized

TIP fellow and STEM teacher, Justin Guida, has been diligently pursuing various opportunities to improve the educational development of students at Southwark School. In 2023, Guida received the following grants to enrich students’ educational experiences:

  • Emerald Foundation Grant: Provided 6-8 grade students at Southwark School the opportunity to form an e-sports team through the Emerald League Initiative.
  • REC Foundation Aerial Drone Grant: Funded the creation of a drone club at Southwark School and gave students the opportunity to join REC Foundation’s nationwide drone competition league.
  • WHYY Media Lab Grant: Funded the creation of a media lab accessible to all grade K-8 students at Southwark School.
  • Trust for Public Land Grant: Helped fund STEM gardening club and take care of new rain garden area at Southwark School.

Beyond these initiatives, Guida helps lead the Fife-PENN STEM and CS Academy, an organization that allows Penn students to come and instruct an after-school coding club for grades 4-5 students at Southwark.

Guida was also a fellow in fall 2023 TIP seminar The Science, Engineering, and Operation of Drones led by Dinesh Thakur, Consulting Director at the Pennovation Center, where he wrote a curriculum unit titled Introduction to Drones- Flying and Coding Skills for the 21st Century Middle School Learner.

Guida’s achievements this past year are a testament to his commitment and dedication to enhancing educational opportunities for students at Southwark, both within and beyond the classroom.
