Seminar Leader Howarth on the Ohio Train Derailment March 16, 2023 – Posted in: Uncategorized

TIP seminar leader and University Advisory Council (UAC) member Marilyn Howarth was recently quoted in Vox on the effects of the train derailment in Ohio. Earlier this month, 100,000 gallons of dangerous chemicals spilled into the air and water of East Palestine, Ohio after a Norfolk Southern train was derailed. Today, as residents of East Palestine return home, they are raising concerns about the long-term effects of the disaster. Some individuals have already reported smelling chemical residue in the air and suffering from headaches and nausea. Regarding the spill, Howarth who is an environmental toxicologist at the Perelman School of Medicine shared “Each of the chemicals that leaked are respiratory irritants, and some of their breakdown products are also irritants.” In discussing next steps for those exposed, she wrote, “This is part of what is unclear: How much of each was experienced by each person and for how long?” Read the full article at https://www.vox.com/science/23612128/ohio-train-derailment-east-palestine-chemical-spill-cleanup-norfolk-southern.
