Workshop Leader Carol Muller on the Sound of Philadelphia August 29, 2024 – Posted in: Uncategorized
Teachers Institute of Philadelphia workshop leader Carol Muller, a professor of musicology in Penn’s School of Arts and Sciences, possesses a wide body of knowledge about the origins of music from around the world. In this Omnia podcast, Professor Muller discusses our city’s own musical heritage, focusing on Gamble and Huff’s “Sound of Philadelphia.” The podcast also features an interview by her graduate student Kwame Ocran with grammy-award winning hip-hop producer Jahlil Beats. A native of Chester, Pennsylvania, Beats has worked with such greats as Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, and Meek Mill. The producer spoke about how, through sampling, hip hop artists have carried the Sound of Philadelphia into contemporary music.
Professor Muller’s fall 2024 workshop “Personal Music Listening as Social Emotional Learning” looks at how students use music to cope with stress. Participants, who teach a variety of subjects and grade levels in the School District of Philadelphia will write lesson plans that incorporate music as a tool for emotional regulation in the classroom. Jahlil beats will be a guest. More information about the workshop is on TIP’s Fall 2024 Workshop page.
