TIP’s Spring 2024 Curriculum Lab Culminating Celebration took place on Wednesday, May 29th at 5:00 pm in the Sky Lounge of Harrison College House. The event marked the end of TIP’s semester-long seminars which have been led by Penn and Temple professors.
During the Celebration, fellows from each of the spring seminars shared what they learned throughout the semester and how they incorporated their findings into the units of study they created. The Spring 2024 seminars were:
- Children’s Literature and the Immigrant Experience – led by H. Gerald Campano, Professor Literacy, Culture and International Education at Penn’s Graduate School of Education. During the seminar, fellows explored migration and human mobility through children’s literature and young adult fiction.
- The Past, Present, and Future of Latinx Studies – led by Rebeca L. Hey-Colón, Assistant Professor of Latin American Studies at Temple University. Fellows learned about how the field of Latinx studies complicates constructions of class, ethnicity, gender, language and race in the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean.
- The Soviet Century: Russia, Socialism, and the Modern World – led by Benjamin Nathans, Associate Professor of History at Penn. This seminar explored topics including the emergence and dissolution of the Soviet Union, the role of ideology in state policy and everyday life, and the origins and consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
- Asian Meditation Traditions Past and Present – led by Deven Patel, Associate Professor of South Asia Studies at Penn. Fellows learned about the early roots of meditation in Asia and its impact on conversations and movements that address social justice, intercultural communication, sustainability, artistic expression, cognitive science and general wellness.
Fellows will begin implementing their curriculum units in the fall of 2024. At that time they will be made available to the public at www.theteachersinstitute.org.
