Philly Teachers Participate in Yale Summer Intensive July 16, 2023 – Posted in: Uncategorized
Four School District of Philadelphia teachers joined their colleagues from around the country at the Yale National Initiative’s summer intensive program in New Haven. These Teachers Institute of Philadelphia fellows distinguished themselves by participating in a special round of seminars at led by Yale professors and writing curriculum units on the topic they studied. Like the seminars they take in Philadelphia, the Yale seminars require them to undertake in-depth study and adapt the content they learn to their grade level and classroom setting.
The following are the fellows who participated, along with the seminar they took:
- Chloe Glynn, Horace Furnace High School: Nature-Inspired Solutions to Disease Problems
- Anna Herman, The U School: Nature-Inspired Solutions to Disease Problems
- Tyriese Holloway, Overbrook High School: Histories of Art, Race, and Empire: 1492-1865
- Lisa Yuk Kuen Yau, Francis Scott Key School: Transitions in the Conception of Number: From Whole Numbers to Rational Numbers to Algebra
The teachers participate in a two-week intensive session (July 10-21), in which they live on the Yale campus and spend a full day discussing, researching, and writing a unit of study about their topic. Fellows implement their units in the classroom in the fall, then reconvene in a November 2-3 conference to share the results. The units they create are shared with teachers everywhere via the Yale National Initiative’s website.
