2021 Annual Celebration of Writing and Literacy August 24, 2021 – Posted in: Uncategorized

The Teachers Institute of Philadelphia is partnering with the Philadelphia Writing Project for the 5th time to present A Celebration of Writing and Literacy(CoWL). CoWL is an annual two-day conference presented by and for Philadelphia educators. The focus is teacher research and knowledge. This year’s theme, Making Stories Visible, invites participants to bring to light what has been obscured during a year of pandemic and political turmoil. The conference will be held on Saturday-Sunday October 16-17, 2021, 9:00am – 2:00pm. Saturday’s program will be held via zoom and Sunday’s events will take place at the Penn Museum featuring a writing marathon exploring the museum’s collections.

Featured speakers will include the following members of the Our Democracy Project:

  • Andrea Bruce – Award-winning photojournalist and Our Democracy Team Leader
  • Lorraine Ustaris – Teacher, Multi-media Producer, Science Leadership Academy
  • Dale Mezzacappa – Journalist and Sr. Reporter, Chalkbeat Philadelphia

Sunday’s events at the Penn Museum will be led by Lucy Fowler Williams associate curator who will focus on the Native American collections at the museum. The featured event will be a writing marathon using artefacts from the museum’s collection.
