TIP Fellows Attend Launch of Yale Intensive Seminar Program May 6, 2024 – Posted in: Uncategorized

On May 3rd and 4th, five TIP fellows traveled to New Haven for the organizational session of the Yale National Initiative’s 2024 intensive seminar program. The Philadelphia public school teachers are among 47 from 15 school districts across the United States chosen to participate in Yale’s Summer Institute. The five national fellows, and the seminars they are taking, are:

  • Garcia, Danina; Vaux Big Picture High School; A History of Black People as Readers: A Genealogy of Critical Literacy led by Roderick A. Ferguson, William Robertson Coe Professor of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies and of American Studies
  • Glynn, Chloe; Horace Furness High School; Energy: Past, Present, and Future led by Gary Brudvig, Benjamin Silliman Professor of Chemistry
  • Herman, Anna; The U School; Energy: Past, Present, and Future led by Gary Brudvig, Benjamin Silliman Professor of Chemistry
  • Holloway, Tyriese; Overbrook High School; A History of Black People as Readers: A Genealogy of Critical Literacy led by Roderick A. Ferguson, William Robertson Coe Professor of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies and of American Studies
  • McKnight, Alima; Richmond Elementary School; Landscape, Art, and Ecology led by Timothy Barringer, Paul Mellon Professor in the History of Art

Fellows will return to New Haven in July for the two-week intensive program. They will meet daily with their seminar leader to cover their topic and write a unit of study on it. During that time, they will also live and take meals together in one of Yale’s residential colleges. The program creates a collaborative environment in which top teachers from around the country can share ideas about content and practice.

Like TIP’s seminars, these national seminars aim to strengthen teaching in public schools by providing educators with a deeper knowledge of the subjects they teach. Throughout the program, participants craft curriculum units to teach their students about the topic they learned which is available to teachers everywhere at teachers.yale.edu. These curriculum units cover the academic standards of each teacher’s school district and help them create a more engaging classroom experience for students. The two-week intensive seminar sessions will take place from July 8-19 on Yale’s campus.
