Fellows, students, present work at Yale Annual Conference October 31, 2024 – Posted in: Uncategorized

The Yale National Institute Annual Conference provided an opportunity for TIP teachers to showcase their work to peers around the country. The event featured a presentation by TIP fellow Tyriese Holloway and his student, Shaqueah Henry, an Overbrook High School senior.

The conference was held from October 25th-26th at Yale University in New Haven, CT. Among those in attendance were teachers and administrators from all over the country, including four TIP fellows:

  • Tyriese Holloway, Overbrook High School
  • Chloe Glynn, Horace Furness High School
  • Anna Herman, The U School
  • Alima McKnight, Richmond Elementary School

The presentations from students and teachers were the highlight of the conference. The work done by student Shaqueah Henry was completed as part of a unit of study Holloway created in the seminar he took over the summer at Yale, entitled A History of Black People as Readers: A Genealogy of Critical Literacy. Based on the experience, he created a curriculum unit connecting Shakespeare’s Othello with visual art. He implemented his unit in his English class at Overbrook HS. Henry’s presentation was replete with images of art discussed in the unit.

In break-out sessions at the conference, TIP fellows met with Deputy superintendent Jermaine Dawson, who represented the School District of Philadelphia. Dawson voiced his enthusiasm for the work done by TIP fellows and pledged to deepen the school district’s collaboration with TIP.
