TIP Fellows Attend Yale’s Summer Intensive Program May 6, 2024 – Posted in: Uncategorized
From July 5th – 19th, five TIP fellows traveled to New Haven for the Yale National Initiative’s 2024 intensive seminar program. The Philadelphia public school teachers were among 47 from 15 school districts across the United States chosen to participate in Yale’s Summer Institute. Like TIP, this national program helps teachers expand their knowledge base and improve their confidence in the classroom by studying with renowned university faculty members. The five national fellows, and the seminars they took, were:
- Danina Garcia, Vaux Big Picture High School
A History of Black People as Readers: A Genealogy of Critical Literacy, led by Roderick A. Ferguson, William Robertson Coe Professor of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies and of American Studies - Chloe Glynn, Horace Furness High School
Energy: Past, Present, and Future, led by Gary Brudvig, Benjamin Silliman Professor of Chemistry - Anna Herman, The U School
Energy: Past, Present, and Future, led by Gary Brudvig, Benjamin Silliman Professor of Chemistry - Tyriese Holloway, Overbrook High School
A History of Black People as Readers: A Genealogy of Critical Literacy, led by Roderick A. Ferguson, William Robertson Coe Professor of Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies and of American Studies. Tyriese also served as the coordinator for his seminar. - Alima McKnight; Richmond Elementary School
Landscape, Art, and Ecology, led by Timothy Barringer, Paul Mellon Professor in the History of Art
In the two-week intensive program fellows met daily with their seminar leader to learn about a topic of their choosing. During that time, they wrote units of study which, like the ones they create in TIP, will be used in their classrooms. They also lived and took meals together in one of Yale’s residential colleges, enabling them to discuss their work and learn from one another. Now in its 20th year, the Summer Intensive Program brings top teachers from around the country together to share ideas about content and practice.
Like TIP’s seminars, these national seminars aim to strengthen teaching in public schools. Yale shares the units national fellows create on its website, teachers.yale.edu. These curriculum units cover the academic standards of each teacher’s school district and help them create a more engaging classroom experience for students.
